DonkeyA race Back in Time Days
once a year, folks around these parts get to drag their asses down the main street of an old mining town. it’s called donkey derby days, and it happens June 27-28 in Cripple Creek. the 78th annual event celebrates the town’s heritage in a unique way. anyone who wanders into town that weekend and thinks they want to try to lead a donkey (biblically called asses) for a mile, stopping to bob for apples, navigate a slalom course, or kiss a (cardboard) prostitute, can toss their name into a hat. there’s a small fee to do that – and only about eight two-person teams who sign up each day actually get to race.
