SWAP OUT ACCESSORIES

Look in your attic or basement storage to see what’s there. You may decide you want to resurrect something you once loved and put away. It will seem fresh and new again, if you haven’t used it in a while.

“Everybody’s got stuff like that,” Sommers says.

Consider taking a small painting off the wall and putting it on an easel on a flat surface. It takes on a whole new significance, Schell suggests. Or just switch your old gold or silver picture frames for black ones.

GET FUNCTIONAL

People are looking for accessories that are functional as well as decorative.

That’s why decorative wooden book boxes are so popular. Placed on a coffee table, they hide all those unsightly remotes!

Or here’s an idea.

“Dig out Grandma’s old silver service, polish it, display it – and actually use it!” Schell suggests.

GO GREEN

Sommers displays gorgeous furniture made from recycled lumber and other materials.

“It’s beautiful, and it’s good for the environment,” he says. “And you don’t have to worry about putting your feet up on the coffee table that’s made from barn wood!”

Schell is particularly put off by artificial flowers and fruit.

“Buy a real plant,” he says. Not only does it look good, it adds oxygen to a room. And there’s nothing wrong with a bowl of real fruit in the center of a kitchen or dining table.

“Eat it and then replace it to keep it looking fresh – it’s good for you!” he adds.
