coveted People’s Choice Award,” Sorvald explains. “Where else can they have their designs and those of their suppliers and subcontractors viewed by over 20,000 people?”
The event is also a fundraiser for HBA Cares, the philanthropic wing of the CSHBA that, among other projects, supports nonprofits who provide housing and living assistance through financial contributions, volunteer hours and in-kind donations.
Always an event that has a trick up its sleeve, the surprise at this year’s Parade — which features 23 homes from 20 different builders — is the geographic shift. Whereas in recent years the Parade’s hub sites have trended north, 2009’s hub lies to the west in Cedar Heights, a neighborhood tucked into the hills above the Garden of the Gods.
“Cedar Heights itself is one of the best-kept secrets in Colorado Springs. It’s truly one of the most magnificent pieces of property I’ve ever been involved
with,” says Larry Nichols, co-owner of Nichols & Comito custom home builders. He explains that the neighborhood slopes to the south, giving every lot an incredible view of the city, Cheyenne Mountain and Pikes Peak.
At Cedar Heights, Nichols & Comito plans to offer the 2009 Celebration Home, which was built into the side of a steep, 1-acre-plus lot. “The site was such an awesomely beautiful site that it works well, and the way we designed it, the views are unbelievable from every level.”
Views are obviously one of the main components of Colorado contemporary style, which focuses on bringing the outdoors in with ample light, the use of natural materials and plentiful outdoor living space.
