Although u.s. Mint records do not show that any liberty head nickels were produced in 1913, five specimens were introduced by Mint employee samuel brown at the American numismatic Association’s annual convention in Chicago in 1920. several theories have emerged as to the origin of the mysterious coins. one sold for over $3 million in 2004, and now three of the infamous five are on display at the Money Museum through summer 2009.

thE bAroQuE WorlD oF FErnAnDo botEro the works of Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando botero depict the comedy of life sometimes with a mocking observation, sometimes with a deep, elementary emotion. this will be the first retrospective exhibition of botero’s work in the u.s. since 1978. on display May 23, through August 15, 2009.

AnCIEnt ColorADo sPrIngs: thE PAlEontology oF rED roCk CAnyon the dramatic ridges and canyons of this popular Colorado springs park reveal over 300 million years of geologic time. the fossil evidence that surrounds park visitors shows that Colorado springs once boasted a vastly different landscape filled with water, sharks, dinosaurs and flying reptiles. Come see the fossilized remains of this ancient world at the Colorado springs Pioneers Museum. on display through Fall 2009. goIng For thE golD: PIkEs PEAk or bust! this region’s history is linked directly to the 1859 “Pikes Peak or bust” gold rush. the rush compelled ordinary people to take extraordinary risks in coming to this area. through historic artifacts, photographs, documents and the true stories of the men, women, and children who traveled to Pikes Peak, museum visitors can learn about the beginnings of Colorado City, El Paso County and those who were “busted” by the rough conditions and hardships of the frontier. onE MAn AnD hIs vIsIon: gEnErAl WIllIAM JACkson PAlMEr Who was general William J. Palmer and why is his statue in the middle of the intersection of Platte and nevada Avenues? While many long-time citizens believe they know him well: he founded our city, has many landmarks named after him and built his wife Queen a modest little over by the garden of the gods, this new exhibit honors Palmer as a “builder of the West,” a military hero, a visionary, and a ruthless capitalist. on display now through spring 2010.
